The Difference Between Therapy and Psychological Testing — And When You Might Need Both

Psychological testing and therapy are both essential tools for supporting mental health—but they serve very different purposes. Understanding these differences can help you (or your provider) decide what type of service is the right next step.

Key Differences:

  • Psychological Testing involves structured assessments used to clarify diagnoses, guide treatment, or answer referral questions. It’s often short-term and results in a written report.

  • Therapy is an ongoing, relational process aimed at improving mental health through evidence-based interventions like CBT or EMDR.

You might need both if:

  • You’re unsure whether symptoms stem from ADHD, trauma, anxiety, or another diagnosis

  • You’re starting therapy but need diagnostic clarity first

  • You’re seeking accommodations at work or school

At UCPS, we offer both services and can help you determine which path—or combination—is right for you. Explore our therapy options or learn more about psychological evaluations.
