Mitigation Evaluations
Special Mitigation Evaluations
We conduct special mitigation evaluations to assist courts, attorneys, and mitigation specialists in understanding the psychological, developmental, and contextual factors that may have contributed to a defendant’s behavior. These evaluations are often used in sentencing or post-conviction proceedings to provide a comprehensive view of the individual beyond the legal charges.
Our evaluations are designed to:
Identify psychological, neurodevelopmental, or psychosocial factors that may have impaired judgment, impulse control, or behavioral regulation
Explore the impact of trauma, abuse, intellectual or cognitive limitations, substance use, or mental illness on the individual’s life trajectory and functioning
Provide a holistic understanding of the individual’s history and mental health in relation to their current legal situation
Support mitigation efforts in criminal cases by offering clear, clinically grounded insight into how and why the offense occurred
What Our Special Mitigation Evaluations Include:
An in-depth 90-minute clinical interview and psychosocial history that explores developmental milestones, trauma exposure, education, family dynamics, and behavioral patterns
Administration of psychological and neurocognitive tests as indicated, including assessments of intelligence, executive functioning, personality, and mental health
Review of extensive collateral records, including school, medical, mental health, juvenile, or correctional documentation
Collateral interviews with family members, caregivers, or individuals who can provide historical or contextual information
A comprehensive, court-ready forensic report that outlines relevant clinical findings and provides mitigation-informed recommendations for sentencing, treatment, or placement
Our approach is trauma-informed, culturally sensitive, and rooted in the understanding that behavior is shaped by complex, intersecting influences. Whether requested by defense counsel, mitigation specialists, or court-appointed teams, our goal is to provide thoughtful, objective evaluations that support fair and humane outcomes in the justice system.
